			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.garrickdconner.com"><img class="alignright  wp-image-3975" style="border:0 none;" title="sanctity-of-life" src="http://expressionsandinsights.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/sanctity-of-life.jpg?w=390&#038;h=390" alt="" width="390" height="390" /></a>&#8220;We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.&#8221;</p>
<p>Self-evident. Really? These familiar words from our <a href="http://www.constitution.org/usdeclar.pdf" target="_blank">Declaration of Independence</a> seem to hold less merit with each passing year.</p>
<p>Today Southern Baptists across this nation recognize &#8216;Sanctity of Human Life Sunday.&#8217; A national day to acknowledge the value of human life was first set aside in a <a href="http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/archives/speeches/1984/11384c.htm" target="_blank">proclamation</a> by President Ronald Reagan in 1984. That, of course, was eleven years after the US Supreme Court&#8217;s landmark decision, Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the United States. The principal decision repealed all state laws prohibiting abortion.</p>
<p>Now, some 39 years after Roe v. Wade &#8212; and more than 50 million abortions later &#8212; many in the Christian community continue to pray for Roe v. Wade to be overturned. Of course, with an increasingly liberal set of supreme court justices, such an ambitious goal seems unlikely in the near future. Still many individuals, churches, and pro-life groups continue to wage war on behalf of the unborn.</p>
<p>Perhaps no one more deeply regrets the high court&#8217;s decision than Norma McCorvey, better known as &#8220;Jane Roe,&#8221; the plaintiff in the case. In her book <em>Won by Love</em>, McCorvey explained her changed view on the issue of abortion:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I was sitting in O.R.&#8217;s offices when I noticed a fetal development poster. The progression was so obvious, the eyes were so sweet. It hurt my heart, just looking at them. I ran outside and finally, it dawned on me. &#8216;Norma&#8217;, I said to myself, &#8216;They&#8217;re right&#8217;. I had worked with pregnant women for years. I had been through three pregnancies and deliveries myself. I should have known. Yet something in that poster made me lose my breath. I kept seeing the picture of that tiny, 10-week-old embryo, and I said to myself, that&#8217;s a baby! It&#8217;s as if blinders just fell off my eyes and I suddenly understood the truth — that&#8217;s a baby!</p>
<p>I felt crushed under the truth of this realization. I had to face up to the awful reality. Abortion wasn&#8217;t about &#8216;products of conception&#8217;. It wasn&#8217;t about &#8216;missed periods&#8217;. It was about children being killed in their mother&#8217;s wombs. All those years I was wrong. Signing that affidavit, I was wrong. Working in an abortion clinic, I was wrong. No more of this first trimester, second trimester, third trimester stuff. Abortion — at any point — was wrong. It was so clear. Painfully clear.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>McCorvey, now 64, has since been re-confirmed as a member in the Catholic Church. She is an ardent supporter of the pro-life cause.</p>
<p>Having served as a licensed therapist for a number of years, I have personally witnessed the damage that abortion does &#8212; emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Increasingly, there is concern in the medical community about physical harm as well, including a possible link between abortion and breast cancer.</p>
<p>Of course, only God knows the full scope of the impact of abortion. However, in my therapeutic and ministerial counseling with women, I have seen first-hand the anguish, torment, and far-reaching effects of abortion on family relationships. I only know that what many Americans want to view as a choice is altogether inconsistent with both the words of Scripture in <a href="http://www.biblestudytools.com/psalms/passage.aspx?q=psalms+139:13-16" target="_blank">Psalm 139:13-16</a>, <em>and </em>the Judeo-Christian values that our nation&#8217;s founding fathers sought to serve as the cornerstone of our republic. Consider these words from President Reagan:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Make no mistake, abortion-on-demand is not a right granted by the Constitution. No serious scholar, including one disposed to agree with the Court&#8217;s result, has argued that the framers of the Constitution intended to create such a right.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Reagan argued that it is impossible &#8220;to diminish the value of one category of human life &#8212; the unborn &#8212; without diminishing the value of all human life.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps the most amazing thing about God is His ability to forgive the sin of those who call upon the name of Jesus. If you have had an abortion, you can still find forgiveness in Him. If you are considering abortion, please reach out to a local Crisis Pregnancy Center. Their staff can help you find solutions that preserve both the life of your baby and the integrity of your emotional self. <p><strong>YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Pray for those who may be considering abortion.</li>
<li>Find a way to volunteer or otherwise contribute to a Christian family ministry or local Crisis Pregnancy Center. (Diapers, formula, baby clothes, and bedding are always in demand.)</li>
<li>Consider adopting a child or serving as a foster parent or respite care worker.</li>
<li>Become involved in your local or state pro-life movement, and be a voice for the unborn.</li>
<li>Pray for an end to legalized abortion in America.</li>
</ul>
<p>On this Sanctity of Human Life Day, let&#8217;s pray and work together for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to be equal rights for both the born and the unborn.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.garrickdconner.com"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-3574" style="border:0 none;margin-left:3px;margin-right:3px;" title="white-ribbons-against-pornography" src="http://expressionsandinsights.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/white-ribbons-against-pornography.jpg?w=630" alt=""   /></a>Today begins the week that draws attention and raises awareness of the dangerous and ever-increasing impact of pornography in our culture. It&#8217;s a problem that has led to the destruction of countless marriages and relationships, including several close friends. Many of you know that my dissertation was centered around developing effective ministries to help combat this problem &#8212; a problem that<a href="http://www.stonebriar.org/about-us/staff-elders/staffmembers/Swindoll/" target="_blank"> Chuck Swindoll</a> has called the #1 problem in the church today.</p>
<p>In an <a href="http://www.urbansermons.org/f/wiki/swindolls-open-letter-church" target="_blank">open letter</a> posted to his website several years ago, Swindoll wrote:</p>
<blockquote><p>The most recent studies available suggest that one out of every two people &#8212; that&#8217;s 50% &#8212; of the people sitting in our pews, are looking at and/or could be addicted to internet pornography. Stop and imagine the ugly but very real possibility of some of your own elders and deacons leaving your meeting and going home to surf porn. Think about youth leaders viewing it one minute, and leading a small group with your kids thirty minutes later. It&#8217;s ruining marriages, destroying relationships, harming youth, and hurting the body of Christ. . . . My friend, it&#8217;s time to do something about it. In fact, we need to start today. Making a difference requires action . . . . Our churches are in trouble. This is not the time to simply wait and pray.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>I have fought &#8212; and to a large extent still fight daily &#8212; the battle against pornography in my own life. It&#8217;s not a fun thing to talk about. It&#8217;s certainly not something that most people want to think about, especially as it relates to Christians and ministry leaders. However, <em>not </em>acknowledging and <em>not </em>talking about it is precisely why pornography is considered a silent epidemic that impacts far more men and women than you&#8217;d like to know. Sexual temptation really can be thought of as <em>every man&#8217;s battle &#8212; </em>or, for that matter, <em>every person&#8217;s battle. </em>Many studies and surveys have been conducted regarding sexual thoughts and behaviors. While the statistics do not always match, they do almost universally sound major alarms about the severity of the problem. Consider for a moment these statistics:</p>
<p><strong>GENERAL STATISTICS</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>12% of internet websites are pornographic. That&#8217;s 24,644,172 sites! (United Families International)</li>
<li>Every second $3,075.64 is spent on pornography &#8212; and 28,258 people are viewing porn. (UFI)</li>
<li>Total porn industry revenue for 2006: $13.3 billion in the US; $97 billion worldwide.</li>
<li>40 million Americans are regular visitors to porn sites. (UFI)</li>
<li>29% of born-again adults in the US feel that it is morally acceptable to view movies with explicit sexual behavior. (Barna Group)</li>
<li>42% of adults believe it is &#8220;morally acceptable&#8221; to have a sexual relationship with someone of the opposite sex to whom they are not married.</li>
<li>The least popular day of the year for viewing porn is Thanksgiving. (UFI)</li>
<li>The most popular day of the week for viewing porn is Sunday. (UFI)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>REGARDING CLERGY</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>51% of pastors say cyber-pornography is a possible temptation; 37% say it is a current struggle. (<em>Christianity Today</em>, Leadership Survey, December 2001)</li>
<li>20% of all the calls received on the Focus on the Family Pastoral Care Line are for help with issues such as pornography and compulsive sexual behavior.</li>
<li>33% of clergy admitted to having visited a sexually explicit website. Of those who had visited a pornographic site, 53% had visited such sites &#8220;a few times&#8221; in the past year, and 18% visit sexually explicit sites between a couple times a month and more than once a week.</li>
<li>57% of pastors say that addiction to pornography is the most sexually damaging issue to their congregation. (Christians and Sex Leadership Journal Survey, March 2005)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>REGARDING MEN</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>70% of men from age 18-24 visit a pornographic site in a typical month. (UFI)</li>
<li>67% of 18-26-year-old men believe viewing pornography is acceptable.</li>
<li>66% of men in their 20&#8242;s and 30&#8242;s admit to being regular users of pornography.</li>
<li>20% of men admit to accessing pornography at work. (UFI)</li>
<li>Half of unmarried men ages 20-29 said they would have sex without any interest in marriage.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>REGARDING WOMEN</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>28% of those admitted to sexual addiction are women.</li>
<li>34% of female readers of <em>Today&#8217;s Christian Woman</em>&#8216;s online newsletter admitted to intentionally accessing internet pornography &#8212; and 1 out of every 6 women, including Christians, struggles with an addiction to pornography.</li>
<li>49% of 18-26-year-old women believe viewing pornography is acceptable.</li>
<li>13% of women admit to accessing pornography at work. (UFI)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>REGARDING FAMILIES</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>47% of Christian families said pornography is a problem in their home. (Focus on the Family, October 2003)</li>
<li>The internet was a significant factor is 2 out of 3 divorces. (American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, 2003)</li>
<li>9 out of 10 children between the ages of 8 and 16 have viewed pornography on the internet, in most cases unintentionally. (London School of Economics, January 2002)</li>
<li>Average age of first internet exposure to pornography: 11 (InternetFilterReview.com and UFI)</li>
<li>Largest consumer of internet pornography: 12-17-year olds (various sources as of 2007)</li>
<li>1 in 7 children who use the internet have been sexually solicited. (InternetFilerReview.com 2005)</li>
<li>80% of 15-17-year-olds have had multiple hard-core exposures.</li>
</ul>
<p>Over the last ten years there have been a number of positive attempts to proactively lift the veil from this dirty little secret. These include efforts by <a href="http://www.promisekeepers.org/" target="_blank">Promise Keepers</a>, <a href="http://www.xxxchurch.com/" target="_blank">XXX Church</a>, <a href="http://newlife.com/emb/" target="_blank">Every Man&#8217;s Battle</a>, and <a href="http://www.freedombeginshere.org/" target="_blank">Freedom Begins Here</a>. I remain convinced, however, that we have much work left to do. It starts with me; it starts with you. I encourage you to take the following steps with regard to this issue:<span id="more-3563"></span></p>
<ol>
<li>Get your head out of the sand and acknowledge the reality of pornography&#8217;s influence in our sex-saturated society.</li>
<li>Examine your own life, and honestly assess your risk. <a href="http://www.sexhelp.com/sast.cfm" target="_blank">Here&#8217;s a helpful tool for self-evaluation</a>.</li>
<li>Purchase a filtering program for your computer, particularly any computers shared by your children &#8212; even occasionally.</li>
<li>If you struggle with sexually compulsive thoughts and/or behaviors, admit this truth to a same-sex friend who can help hold you accountable.  In fact, I urge you to have a set of friends to help keep you honest with yourself and with them. Here&#8217;s a great list of <a href="http://www.menofintegrity.org/articles/accountabilityquestions.html" target="_blank">men&#8217;s accountability questions</a> that can be customized as you see fit. Here are other <a href="http://www.characterthatcounts.org/accountquestnew.html" target="_blank">accountability questions</a> specific to men, women, couples, and teens. I strongly advise you to use an internet monitoring service that reports your internet activity to one or more accountability partners. I have used <a href="http://www.covenanteyes.com/" target="_blank">Covenant Eyes</a> for years and highly recommend it.</li>
<li>Educate your children about the dangers of the internet (including smart phones and apps). I want my kids to learn about sex from me and my wife &#8212; not some online stranger. Don&#8217;t be afraid to start talking with them about it &#8216;too early.&#8217; Chances are good that they already know more than you think.</li>
<li>Educate yourself about the ways kids can circumvent filtering.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.garrickdconner.com"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-3507" style="border:0 none;" title="9-11-2011-America-Remembers" src="http://expressionsandinsights.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/9-11-2011-america-remembers.jpg?w=630" alt=""   /></a>For people all over the world, September 11, 2001 will be a day that lives in infamy in our memory. It was a day that profoundly changed the way most of us think about life &#8212; and a day that took so many lives and shattered the hopes, hearts, and dreams of so many others.</p>
<p>On that Tuesday morning I had been in my office at a residential children&#8217;s facility for about an hour when the phone rang. The voice on the other end belonged to my wife, Michelle . . . yet there was a timbre in her tone that instantly conveyed the message that all was not well. Immediately my thoughts rushed to my then eight-month-old son, Jackson, who was in the house with her. But before I could ask about him, Michelle interrupted and asked, &#8220;Have you seen the news?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; I replied, puzzled. I quickly clicked onto a news website and saw &#8216;BREAKING NEWS&#8217; in bright red.</p>
<p>&#8220;A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center,&#8221; she said, her voice shaking. &#8220;It&#8217;s bad, Garrick.&#8221;</p>
<p>I quickly headed to the TV room to turn on the news. Of course, finding the news wouldn&#8217;t be a problem, since it seemed to be on every channel. Within a matter of minutes, I, along with the rest of the waiting world, would soon discover that this was no accident. When the second plane hit the South Tower at three minutes past the hour, I remember my heart just sinking. Those of us gathered around stood speechless, in total disbelief of what our eyes were telling our brains.</p>
<p>In those moments the world as we knew it changed forever. Freedom turned to fear and anxiety to agony as the full scope of this attack on America unfolded in what seemed like slow motion. Within the hour another plane hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Reporters on the ground struggled to explain what was happening. They couldn&#8217;t quite wrap their minds around it all either.</p>
<p>By the time <a class="zem_slink" title="United Airlines Flight 93" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=40.0511111111,-78.9047222222&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=40.0511111111,-78.9047222222%20%28United%20Airlines%20Flight%2093%29&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">United Airlines Flight 93</a> crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, I remember thinking to myself, &#8220;When will it end? What&#8217;s next?!&#8221;<span id="more-3502"></span></p>
<p>Of course, my job didn&#8217;t really afford me the luxury of becoming a shell-shocked couch potato, as much as I wanted to be just that. As the manager of that residential program, I was responsible for the emotional and physical well-being of a number of children, ranging in age from five to twelve years. As the houseparents received word that the schools were dismissing children, we all began to shift into survival mode. The kids would have questions. We all did. But the one thing none of us could afford to do was let the kids know we were upset.</p>
<p>I met quickly with our morning shift workers and discussed our action plan for dealing with the kids and their families. Above all, the plan involved channeling our adrenaline into positive thoughts and actions. Somehow on 9/11 the world seemed a whole lot smaller . . . a lot more connected . . . and a lot more caring.</p>
<p>As I went to the store that day, I couldn&#8217;t help but notice that every single person I encountered &#8212; from the customers in the parking lot to the cashier behind the register &#8212; was feeling much the same as me. I couldn&#8217;t wait to go to bed that night. I think something inside of me thought that maybe if I could just get to sleep, then when I woke up I&#8217;d realize that the chaos of that day had been nothing more than a bad dream. As I would find out on Wednesday morning, it was an absolute nightmare &#8212; a national one with far-reaching implications for every person on the planet: Evil is real, and there&#8217;s no way to escape its influence in our lives.</p>
<p>Now ten years later, I look back on 9/11 and feel things much the same that I felt on that very day. As I reflect on that dark time in our nation&#8217;s history, one thing stands out perhaps more than any other. In the few days following 9/11, people were nicer . . . friendlier . . . more grateful for the little things. In those times people turned to the church for comfort, for solace, and for answers to questions the world couldn&#8217;t seem to explain.</p>
<p>Like a person who suddenly lost a neighbor or friend, the whole country was made fully aware of the fragility of life, the uncertainty of tomorrow, the amazing lack of control we have over so many things. As we remember 9/11 and pray for those whose lives were irrevocably changed due to the evil plans of a few, wouldn&#8217;t it be great if we could somehow recapture that appreciation for life we all had once the fires were extinguished and the dust began to settle?</p>
<p>Perhaps the very best tribute we could offer on this day of remembrance would be to again hug our families tightly, do something kind for a neighbor, and thank God for the many blessings we each enjoy. The heroes who died bravely striving to save lives on that day wouldn&#8217;t want us to wallow in self-pity. They&#8217;d want us to fully embrace the wonder of this gift of life . . . to treasure each moment with family and friends . . . and to fight passionately to keep the freedom that still makes America a beacon of light today.</p>
<p>Surely we can muster the courage to do that. Surely.</p>

Labor Day weekend in the US. Unfortunately for American workers, the news is really no better than this time last year. In fact, it&#8217;s even worse.</p>
<p>While the mainstream media toggles between fostering hope and invoking gloom, the number of individuals and families impacted by this crippled economy continues to climb. Of course, the 9.1% unemployment rate is disheartening . . . but when you factor in those who are long-term unemployed (they&#8217;re not actually counted in the numbers from the Labor Department, you know) and the under-employed, the number is staggering indeed. In recent months I have noticed an increase in the average age of the servers who wait on me in restaurants and the employees who work in retail stores. So many people are now doing work for which they are grossly over-qualified because they simply cannot find a more lucrative employment option.</p>
<p>While the partisans in Washington and the talking heads on cable TV duke it out about where to place blame for the current situation, the cause, I believe, is more foundational than systemic. Back in 2008 when the stock market tanked and the era of the bail-outs was born, there was a lot of talk about certain corporations being &#8216;too big to fail.&#8217; The reality is that nothing in this world is too big to fail.</p>
<p>The major problem with the US economy lies not with the chronically, hopelessly inept politicians but with the pride of our citizens. In times of relative peace and prosperity, Americans began to believe they were exceptional &#8212; by definition, meaning the exception to most rules of conventional wisdom. It seems to me that many confused the concepts of <em>exception </em>and <em>exemption</em>. Since the 80&#8242;s and 90&#8242;s were characterized by economic growth and upward mobility, Americans began to believe they were exempt from the kind of reason, morality, and common sense that were at the very foundation of our nation&#8217;s vibrancy.</p>
<p>Now, years later, we have begun to realize that the principle of planting and harvesting is true for us too: You reap what you sow.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.garrickdconner.com"><img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-3488 alignleft" style="border:0 none;margin-left:3px;margin-right:3px;" title="store-closing" src="http://expressionsandinsights.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/store-closing.jpg?w=150&#038;h=111" alt="" width="150" height="111" /></a>Signs of the times are all around us. From the empty storefronts to the foreclosed homes to the jam-packed job fairs, America has been radically transformed into a nation in desperate need. And I&#8217;m not just talking about need of jobs either. I&#8217;m speaking of the need for spiritual renewal. Of course, in a country where 700 Christians can&#8217;t prevent a mosque from being built at Ground Zero &#8212; but one atheist can keep a cross from being displayed on a soldier&#8217;s tombstone &#8212; we are a perfect picture of a nation run amuck. Through moral relativism, religious plurality, and self-determinism, America has become a spiritually anemic society.</p>
<p>Please don&#8217;t mishear me. I&#8217;m not trying to say that this is the end of America as we know it; there are plenty of other people out there delivering that sobering prediction. Perhaps our greatest days are ahead of us . . . but not unless we recognize and repair the colossal cracks in our foundation. And such hope for a brighter future is entirely dependent upon returning to God.</p>
<p>This Labor Day, if you are blessed enough to have a job, thank God for it. If you are one of the millions of Americans who is unemployed or under-employed, know that God is real, and He cares for you. In times like these we learn painfully difficult but necessary lessons. My prayer is that the challenges of this present time will not defeat us but humble us &#8212; and ultimately make us stronger.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em><a href="http://www.garrickdconner.com"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-2882" style="border:0;" title="1john1-9" src="http://expressionsandinsights.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/1john1-9.jpg?w=630" alt=""   /></a>Regret</em>. The very word brings to mind sorrow over sin, poor choices, and unwise decisions. And I&#8217;m not just talking about that crazy-looking shirt you wore to a wedding or that second slice of Aunt Maggie&#8217;s outrageously tasty apple pie. I&#8217;m talking about things that can have long-standing impact on ourselves and others.</p>
<p>Although we sometimes hear about a life lived &#8216;without regrets,&#8217; we know there&#8217;s no such thing as that. We all have regrets that often coexist with feelings of shame, guilt, embarrassment, grief, and even anger &#8212; anger at oneself . . . anger at others . . . even anger at God. As Christians we are particularly prone to experience regret, especially over things said or done after our point of salvation &#8212; when we knew the right thing to do and intentionally chose to go in a different direction.</p>
<p>Regret can be a powerful force in our lives, distracting us from the reality of life in the present and taking us back to the past with retrospection and hindsight that amounts to chasing after the wind. Wouldn&#8217;t it be wonderful if life had an &#8216;undo&#8217; button? Or at least a &#8216;reset&#8217; button? Sometimes we experience regret from the time an ungracious word rolls off the tongue. Sometimes we listen not to the gentle spirit of God but rather to the lying and conniving voice of Satan who, as with Adam in Eve, craftily persuades us to tune out the potential consequences of our choices and simply live for the moment. The truth is that our society encourages and to some extent rewards hedonism. If you doubt it, just watch most any &#8216;reality TV&#8217; show from &#8216;Big Brother&#8217; to &#8216;The Bachelor,&#8217; and you&#8217;ll see exactly what I mean.</p>
<p>People of all ages and life stages experience regret. Children and teenagers today live at the speed of light and are bombarded daily with multiple competing messages and worldviews. And I don&#8217;t just mean text messages. Think for a moment about the messages kids get from such things as billboards, commercials, photos, friends, parents, teachers, the internet, etc. We know that many of these messages point them not in the direction of life but rather in the direction of destruction. Many kids today are completely overwhelmed by the pressures and stressors of growing up too fast and being too isolated from the adults in their lives. Pair social isolation with an overdose of modern technology, and you get a climate that is practically devoid of extended times of peace and quiet during which we are most likely to hear and discern the voice of God. Unfortunately, a large number of these kids are merely following the haphazard examples of their way-too-busy parents. Faced with a complex and divergent set of messages and a hurried lifestyle, kids often find themselves making choices that they will regret for the rest of their lives.</p>
<p>As I look back on this calendar year, I regret to say that I too have regrets &#8212; not only for the things I said or did but also for the things I didn&#8217;t say or didn&#8217;t do that I know I should have. I regret the times when I failed to treat my wife and kids with kindness and respect. I regret the harsh words spoken in anger and frustration to those I love. I regret the times when I passed judgment on others with little thought about my own dirty laundry.<span id="more-2872"></span></p>
<p>I regret not spending more time seeking God through prayer and Bible study. I regret the missed opportunities to spend time with others, to encourage those in despair, and to share the love of Christ with those who need to hear it. I regret many of the moments that I focused on myself rather than the needs of others. I regret things I ate, things I watched, things I read, things I listened to. More than anything in the world, I regret listening to the lies of Satan, spoken through a variety of mediums, that said simply, &#8220;Don&#8217;t worry about it. It&#8217;ll be fine. It&#8217;s a gray area. It doesn&#8217;t matter what you do.&#8221;</p>
<p>You see, one thing we can count on in life is the predictability of the evil one in his dealings with believers. He knows he cannot have us, but he sure can minimize our witness and our effectiveness as followers of Christ. Satan looks for our points of weakness, our emotional vulnerabilities, and our sins from the past &#8212; and he pounces like a lion waiting to devour us. But his pounces are often carefully masked as seemingly innocuous opportunities rather than potentially life-altering temptations. He taps into our shame and guilt and forces those things to the forefront of our minds, where we then turn our focus back to the past with its sorrow, shame, and regret. This is the cornerstone that enables a cycle of shame and guilt that can greatly hinder our ability to accept forgiveness from God and extend forgiveness to ourselves.</p>
<p>My challenge to you in this coming year is to remember that God is in the business of healing, restoring, and transforming lives. Through His Son, Jesus Christ, He gives us the opportunity to <a href="http://www.garrickdconner.com/discover-new-life/">experience new life</a> &#8212; abundant life here on earth and eternal life in heaven with Him. And even if you&#8217;ve done some pretty awful things that grieve you deeply, be assured that <em>&#8220;if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.&#8221; </em>(2 Cor. 5:17, NIV)</p>
<p>As you think through your own version of 2010, I challenge you to honestly acknowledge your sins and regrets to God. Ask his forgiveness for anything that may be unconfessed and is still weighing you down mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Visualize yourself actually transferring those burdens into the capable hands of a gracious and merciful God. He sent us Jesus that we might experience freedom, yet so often we choose insecurity, doubt, and bondage. Perhaps there is someone from whom you need to ask forgiveness; that can be a freeing thing indeed.</p>
<p>God does not want us to live stuck in the miry pit of our past. He wants us to live with His power in the present, with an eye on the future in anticipation of the return of Jesus Christ. I&#8217;m reminded of the lyrics of an old song that speaks poignantly of God&#8217;s faithfulness and power:</p>
<blockquote><p>There is no problem too big God cannot solve it.<br />
There is no mountain too tall He cannot move it.<br />
There is no storm too dark God cannot calm it.<br />
There is no sorrow too deep He cannot soothe it.</p>
<p>If He carried the weight of the world upon His shoulders,<br />
I know, my brother that He will carry You.</p></blockquote>
<p>As you look forward to the new year, you can be sure that you&#8217;ll generate new regrets. It happens. We&#8217;re human. But bear in mind that His grace is sufficient for those who believe. Another song puts it this way: &#8220;I know many times I&#8217;ve been out of His will, but I&#8217;ve never been out of His care.&#8221; I don&#8217;t really know if that line passes the sniff test of the world&#8217;s great theologians, but I know those words have spoken to my own heart through the years. Be assured that God has a purpose and plan for each one of us. I don&#8217;t know what that looks like for you, but I know that it includes the freedom and peace that comes when we <a href="http://www.garrickdconner.com/discover-new-life/">discover new life</a> in Christ &#8212; and daily seek counsel from His Word. Perhaps you can use a fresh start in some area of life. Be encouraged by these words from the apostle Paul:</p>
<blockquote><p>Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.&#8221; &#8211; <em>Phil. 3:13b-14, NIV</em></p></blockquote>
<p>I won&#8217;t wish you a year without regrets, but I will wish you a year of good health, personal growth, and Christ-based freedom. May 2011 be a banner year for you, a year in which you focus more closely on the things that matter most. May the love and joy of the Lord richly abound in you and flow through you in the year to come.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.garrickdconner.com"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1959" style="border:0;" title="US-Flag-Half-Staff" src="http://expressionsandinsights.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/us-flag-half-staff.jpg?w=630" alt=""   /></a>Today is Memorial Day . . . a day in which we remember those who have lost their lives in service to our country.</p>
<p>For many of us, the price of freedom has come at great cost to our families. While I have not lost any immediate family members through military service, I have worked with those who have not been so fortunate.</p>
<p>I have worked closely with a number of military families during times of great emotional pain and sorrow &#8212; the kind of anguish that comes when young lives are, in our estimation, cut short. I have also had the privilege of knowing people who never really had the chance to know their parents or grandparents due to the casualties of war. That is the reality for one of our church staff members. Her father died while serving in Vietnam when she was just a little girl.</p>
<p>This day hits me hard every year as I think about the stark ambiguities that seem to be magnified on the evening news. A day that has been specifically set aside to remember those fallen men and women is marked less by memorials and more by boating and backyard barbecues.</p>
<p>On this Memorial Day, I urge you to interrupt your celebration of summer long enough to give sincere thanks to God for those brave soldiers who have made it possible for us to live in the land of the free.</p>
<p>However you choose to spend this day, say some special prayers for those families who are daily reminded of the sacrifices of their loved ones. For them every day is a memorial day.</p>
<p>May we never take our freedom for granted. And may we never ever forget that its price is paid in human lives.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.garrickdconner.com"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1678" style="border:0;" title="Give-Thanks" src="http://expressionsandinsights.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/give-thanks1.jpg?w=300&#038;h=166" alt="" width="300" height="166" /></a>Nestled snugly between the widely commercialized holidays of Halloween and Christmas lies a special day called Thanksgiving . . . a day on which we are encouraged to offer gratitude for our many blessings.</p>
<p>Sadly, I think that for many Thanksgiving Day is little more than an opportunity to overindulge on favorite food items, binge on college football contests, and enjoy a day off work.</p>
<p>This Thanksgiving I challenge you to truly pause to count your blessings &#8212; &#8220;name them one by one,&#8221; as the old familiar hymn so aptly puts it. No matter how many challenges this year has brought, there are still countless things for which we have reason to be thankful.</p>
<p>My family and I are grateful for a new church family &#8212; and a much-needed increase in empathy for those who are unemployed. As so many continue to struggle with unemployment, I am reminded of God&#8217;s provision, and I pray regularly for friends and family members still looking for work.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m grateful also that despite sweeping social and political changes, God has blessed us with freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press, among others.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m grateful for family and friends who make me a better person than I&#8217;d be by myself. Their love, prayers, and constant encouragement challenge me to live a life worthy of the calling I&#8217;ve received in Christ.</p>
<p>Many of you have had a tough year. No doubt about it. Scripture tells us to give thanks in all things. And I pray that this Thanksgiving, you&#8217;ll be able to do just that.</p>
<p>And as retailers roll out the red carpets this weekend, remember that the best things in life aren&#8217;t things at all; they&#8217;re those intangibles that we so often take for granted &#8212; just because we can&#8217;t touch them.</p>
<p>No coupons. No discounts. No early-bird savings necessary. These are the things that are truly priceless.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s kind of funny, isn&#8217;t it? Just think, one day those things we can&#8217;t see on this earth will be the only things that matter. Perhaps we should begin practicing proper gratitude today.</p>
<p>May your Thanksgiving be filled with faith, family, and friendship.</p>

And every pop represents a person, a man or woman engaged in a battle for our continued freedom in an increasingly hostile and volatile world.</p>
<p>These are soldiers on a mission, just another wave of military combatants building on the legacy of those who have proudly served their country for generations before.</p>
<p>Today I salute those men and women who have served our country so well &#8212; our veterans. It has been said many times that freedom isn&#8217;t free. And these folks know that all too well, having experienced first-hand the horror and grief of watching comrades die in battle.</p>
<p>Ask most children today who their heroes are, and you&#8217;ll likely hear a barage of names from professional athletes to Hollywood celebrities to cartoon characters.</p>
<p>I love my country. That&#8217;s why my heroes are America&#8217;s veterans. They represent the best our country has to offer. They have served us well and faithfully. And although they have given so much of themselves for us, I often wonder exactly what we have given them in return.</p>
<p>On this Veterans Day, if you value your freedom, take time out to offer your gratitude to those who have served our country &#8212; and your steadfast prayers for those who currently serve.</p>
